The Romance of the Newfoundland Caribou A A Radclyffe Dugmore 1913

What it is

  • Full title: The Romance of the Newfoundland Caribou: An Intimate Account of the Life of the Reindeer of North America by A. Radclyffe Dugmore.

  • Published: 1913 by J. B. Lippincott Co., Philadelphia (also London: Heinemann) Length / Format: about 191 pages plus front matter; illustrated with paintings, drawings, photographs by the author; includes a folding map; colouring / colour plates; first edition format is large (approx 11"×8")

What's in it (Contents / Major Themes)

Here are key topics the book covers, based on bibliographic descriptions and excerpts:

  • Dugmore’s natural history observations of the Newfoundland caribou: its life cycle, behaviour, mating, migration, perhaps seasonal movement patterns.

  • Descriptions of habitat, what the caribou eats, its interaction with the environment, possibly predators or threats.

  • Some chapters address the human aspect: hunting of caribou; the laws / game laws in Newfoundland related to caribou; maybe conservation or exploitation.

  • Illustrations: plates (colour and/or black & white) and photographs, drawings from life by Dugmore himself.

  • A folding map to show range or migration or distributions of the caribou in Newfoundland.

Significance

  • This book is a classic early‑20th‑century popular natural history work. It blends field observations, art (illustration & photography), and a narrative style that makes wildlife (in this case the Newfoundland caribou) vivid and interesting to general readers.

  • It helps document early attitudes towards caribou in Newfoundland (including perhaps early concern over their status or population). It also provides historical baseline natural history information — useful for anyone studying changes over time (ecology, conservation) in Newfoundland.

  • It is part of Dugmore’s broader work as a wildlife photographer / naturalist, and so reflects both his artistic side and his scientific / observational side.
