Rare NFLD Book - Who's Who In and From Newfoundland 1937 By R. Hibbs

What the Book Is

  • It’s the third edition (as of 1937) of Who’s Who in and From Newfoundland

  • Edited and published by Richard Hibbs (b. 1876) in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

  • Contents include:

    • Biographical entries of living individuals (mostly men) in Newfoundland at that time.

    • Some portraits.

    • A chronology of major historical events in Newfoundland.

    • A review of principal commercial and industrial enterprises.

    • Advertising sections, index, etc.

So it’s not just a biographical directory; it is also a snapshot of the economy, business, and social elites in Newfoundland pre‑Confederation.

⚖️ Estimated Value

There isn’t a lot of readily available public information specifically for the 1937 edition’s sale history. But by comparing what similar editions sell for, and seeing what listings have been, I can make a rough estimate.

Here are relevant comparison points:

  • The 1930 edition of Who’s Who in and From Newfoundland (by Hibbs) has been offered on second‑hand/bookdealer sites for about US$ approx $80 in “very good” condition.

  • Earlier editions (1927, etc.) often appear in Newfoundland‑oriented auctions; e.g. the 1927 edition went for CAD $120 (though condition matters).

Based on these, here’s my estimate for the 1937 edition:

Condition Estimated Value (CAD) Estimated Value (USD)
Good / solid copy (no major damage, complete, with ads and plates / portraits) CAD $80 – $200 roughly US $60 – $150
Very good / better condition, clean binding, minimal wear, intact index, portraits, etc. CAD $200 – $350 roughly US $150 – $270
Premium copy (excellent condition, possibly rare binding, with provenance or special features) CAD $350 – $500+ US $270 – $400+
