1930, The Fisherman's Saint by Sir Wilfred Grenfell

Publication & edition details

  • The work is listed as: The Fishermen’s Saint: Rectorial Address Delivered at St. Andrews University November 1929 by Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell.

  • The official date of the book: 1930 (London: Hodder & Stoughton Ltd) according to the title list. Another listing shows a New York edition from Charles Scribner’s Sons (1930) of 56 pages.

  • The address was given November 1929 at University of St Andrews in Scotland.

  • The piece is an address focusing on the figure of St Andrew as “patron of fishermen” and draws on Grenfell’s own experiences among the deep‑sea fisherfolk. It reflects Grenfell’s lifelong work among the fishing communities of Newfoundland & Labrador via his mission‑medical‑social programmes.

Illustrations & format

  • I did not find a clear source that this edition is illustrated (i.e., with full sets of plates or drawings) in the way earlier Grenfell books often were.

  • The New York listing notes size 8½″ by 5½″, pagination 56pp.

  • Some bibliographic listings render the title as The Fisherman’s Saint (singular “Fisherman’s”) while others as Fishermen’s Saint. The variant matters for exact edition identification.

  • If you’re after which edition you have (UK vs US, illustrated vs plain, cloth vs paper‑covered boards), you may need to examine the front‑matter, binding, and presence of plates.

  • Because the address was given in 1929 but published 1930, you might find earlier proofs or pamphlet versions.
