đ§ Content & Scope
-
The work is described as a “treatise of the geography, natural resources and history of the Island” of Newfoundland, including “an account of recent and present large material movements”.
-
It contains illustrative material: maps, half-tone engravings, portraits. The book represents a snapshot of Newfoundland at the turn of the 20th century: its physical geography, economy (fisheries, resources), history, settlement, and perhaps infrastructure and changes.
-
Its place in bibliographies suggests it is used as a historical source on Newfoundland’s development around 1900.
â Significance
-
Serves as a valuable primary source for the study of Newfoundland at a time when it was still a British colony (prior to 1949 confederation with Canada).
-
The author, Moses Harvey, being a Newfoundland-based figure (born 1820) adds local insight and perspective.
-
The detailed geographic, natural-resource, and historical coverage makes it useful for researchers of Newfoundland’s land, economy, and society around 1900.
-
The inclusion of maps and engravings increases its value as a visual as well as textual source.
â ď¸ Notes / Caveats
-
Being written in 1900, the book reflects the understandings, language, and biases of its time—so modern readers should interpret it in that context.
-
The publishing details show some variation (e.g., S. Garland at St. John’s is noted in microform) which may reflect edition differences.
-
While digitised microform copies exist (e.g., via Canadiana/Internet Archive) the quality may vary.
