1888, Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society and monthly Record of Geography: A Journey in th

Title: Royal Geographical Society and Monthly Record of Geography – Volume 10 (1888)
Article within: “A Journey in the Interior of Labrador: July to October, 1887” by Randle Fynes Wilson Holme (this appears to be the author’s name “Randle F. W. Holme” or variant)
Publication details: London: Royal Geographical Society; article appears in the Journal and Proceedings (April 1888) and is included in the 1888 volume.
Pages: The article runs pages [189]-205 with map.
Subject: Travel and exploration in the interior of Labrador (Canada) during July-October 1887.

Key points / significance

  • It is an original expedition/account of travel in Labrador which at that time was a remote region under British colonial geography/Canadian colonial geography. The article by Holme reports observations from the journey.

  • As part of the Proceedings of the RGS, it reflects the Victorian era geographical/exploratory mindset, publication of field reports and maps.

  • The article provides geographic description, tables/maps, likely observations of terrain, climate, perhaps Indigenous presence or settlement in the Labrador interior.

  • It is useful for historians of Canadian North, Labrador, colonial exploration, and also for geography/history of exploration.

Use in research / things to note

  • Because the article is from 1888, the language, perspective, and geography will reflect the colonial era and may use terminologies that are outdated or biased; interpretation should be made with that in mind.

  • The interior of Labrador at that time would have been less documented, so this account may have unique value, though modern readers might need to cross‐reference more recent research for accuracy.

  • Since it’s part of a larger volume of the Proceedings, you may want to check footnotes, map-legends, context of the meeting where it was read (the “Evening Meeting, 15 February 1888”).
