🧭 Content Highlights

Noble's narrative provides a detailed account of their voyage, including:

  • Initial Challenges: Departing from St. John's, Newfoundland, they found the local icebergs insufficient for artistic study due to their scarcity and distance.

  • Journey to Labrador: They sailed to Battle Harbor, Labrador, where icebergs were more abundant and accessible for sketching.

  • Artistic Endeavors: Church's sketches and subsequent paintings, including The Icebergs (1861), were inspired by this expedition.

  • Return Voyage: Their journey concluded through the Gulf of St. Lawrence, coasting the west of Newfoundland, and traversing Nova Scotia to the Bay of Fundy.

The book offers insights into the Arctic's harsh conditions, the beauty of its icy landscapes, and the interplay between art and nature.
